I think Dekalbs real estate taxes are way to high. How can an average family be expected to pay $4000 a year on taxes for a smaller ranch home. Something needs to be done.

IN RECENTS YEARS, NIU HAS TAKEN MANY PIECES OF REAL ESTATE OFF OF THE TAX ROLES. EVERYTIME THIS IS DONE, IT EFFECTS OUR SCHOOL'S BOTTOM LINE. IT TAKES MONEY RIGHT OUT FROM UNDER THEM. MONIES THAT THEY HAVE AND STILL ARE COUNTING ON. THE OLD RICE HOTEL, THE JOHN DEERE DEALERSHIP, ALL OF THE PROPERTY AROUND THE CONVOCATION CENTER, THE ORIGINAL FARM AND FLEET BUILDING ON WEST LINCOLN HIGHWAY, AN ENTIRE BLOCK OF HOMES ON LINCOLN HWY AND NORMAL ROADS (ABOUT 15 HOMES), THE MOVIE THEATRE ON WEST LINCOLN HWY, AND NOW THE FORMER DEKALB AG BUILDING AND PROPERTY. THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT DOESN'T EQUAL THE LOSS IN REVENUE OUR KIDS ARE FEELING IN THE WAY OF HARD DOLLARS. REMEMBER, NIU PAYS NO REAL ESTATE TAXES WHICH IS WHERE THE SCHOOLS GET THEIR MAIN OPERATING MONEY. HOW ABOUT THE NEW MARRIED STUDENT HOUSING THEY ARE CURRENTLY DRAWING UP? THEY WILL PAY ZERO IN IMPACT FEES FOR THESE UNITS. MARRIED STUDENTS DO COME WITH CHILDREN, THUS AN IMPACT TO THE SCHOOLS AGAIN. NIU HAS PUSHED A PROGRAM FOR SINGLE MOMS WITH CHILDREN. IT IS A GREAT PROGRAM BUT IT IMPACTS OUR SCHOOLS. NIU ACCOUNTS FOR MORE NEWLY ADDED CHILDREN IN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT, CHECK OUT THEIR PRESCHOOL AND DAYCARE FOR CHILDREN FACILITIES, THEY ARE CURRENTLY MAXED OUT WITH STUDENTS CHILDREN. NIU IS ALSO THE MAIN REASON FOR THE OVERBURDEN ON DEKALB'S POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENTS. WHY DID WE BUILD A FIRE DEPARTMENT SO CLOSE TO NIU? BECAUSE THEY ARE THE MAJORITY OF CALLS FROM THURSDAY AFTERNOON TO SUNDAY EVENING. WHY DOES THE POLICE CHIEF WANT THE POLICE STATION CLOSE TO THE WEST END AND NOT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CITY? BECAUSE THE MAJORITY OF THEIR CALLS ARE TO THE NIU VICINITY. THESE ARE FACTS BUT THESE OVERBURDEN ISSUES ARE BEING BLAMED ON NEW DEVELOPMENT. THANK GOD THAT WE HAVE THE NEW DEVELOPMENT THAT WE HAVE. IT HAS GOTTEN US BACK TO GROUND ZERO IN MOST CASES IN REPLENISHING THE MONIES LOST DUE TO NIU. HOPEFULLY THE DEVELOPERS WILL STAY STRONG TO HELP US EVENTUALLY TO GET AHEAD OF THE GAME. LET'S LOOK AT THE REAL PROBLEMS IN THIS COMMUNITY AND LET'S THROW OUT THE POLITICAL B.S. OUT AND SOLVE THE REAL PROBLEMS.
