Kudos, Kudos, Kudos
DeKalb 6th Ward Alderman, Dave Baker, has a radical approach to the city's FY budget woes: common sense. While other tax spenders clamor for "new revenue" (that's cost to us tax payers), Baker has shown the courage, and intelligence, to ask for cuts and, get this: he even suggests that the City sell some of the land they've been sitting on for years.
The DeKalb City Council is considering jacking-up a gasoline tax, increasing sales tax, and increasing just about every other fee they can think of, because they face a budget deficit they blame on a poor economy. All these PERMANENT increases to solve a temporary problem?
Sell some land. Use the proceeds to solve the temporary deficit problem. Put the land back on the tax-rolls and generate permanent revenue without costs to the taxpayers. Holy moly! DeKalb has too much government-owned-non-tax-paying-land.
Keep pushing Dave! Don't let them shoot you down without a fight!
Spending or Revenue?
DeKalb Mayor, Greg Sparrow, refers to the city's budget deficit as, "not a spending problem but a revenue problem." He thinks the City just needs to raise more revenue. In an already tough economy, local tax payers may see it differently. The reason they aren't spending, which drives the economy, is that government just keeps "raising their revenue" (taxes).
MORE KUDOS... DeKalb School Superintendent, Dr. Brian Ali and new School Board President, Tom Teresinski, are CONSIDERING privatization of building maintenance service and driver's education. If they go through with it, and they will meet stiff resistance, they will get better services and save tax payers lots of money in doing so.
They might even get a referendum passed. If they are more forthright in discussing the problems facing the schools and put practical solutions together for solving those problems.
Combine Swim Teams?
Sycamore and DeKalb Schools are mulling over a plan to combine their two swimming teams. Some expect rivalry between alumni to sink the plan. That's silly!
Here's an even better idea... combine the two school districts. Administrative payroll savings could actually result in a property tax cut.
That's what a grass-roots level campaign for a school voucher program in Illinois calls for. Click here to read about it.
