Welcome to DeKalb County, centrally located in northern Illinois, about an hour west of Chicago and a little less than that from the Wisconsin border. We are located between the Fox River to the east and the Rock River to the west.  Oh, we have our very own Kishwaukee River.  But it, like DeKalb County, is a little different.  The South Branch of the Kishwaukee River flows north, like the Nile in Egypt.

Different is an apt word for describing DeKalb County.  Our difference is in our diversity. Perhaps you have seen the little "flying ear of corn" sign on corn fields across the country. It, like barb wire and the harvester, has it origins here in this county. Agriculture is an important part of our lives.  So is education. Northern Illinois University, highly acclaimed for its excellence in education and research, is headquartered in DeKalb. Kishwaukee College, located in Malta, is one of the leading two-year colleges in the state.  Indian Valley Vocational School in Sandwich provides skills in several of the trades for the benefit of many area employers. Our public schools consistently rank among the best in the state and our private schools are unmatched.

DeKalb County is home for many firsts.  It is home for arguably the oldest but certainly the best County Farm Bureau. The Sandwich Fair is the oldest continuous county fair.  The DeKalb Municipal Band is the oldest continuous municipal band.  The Sycamore Pumpkin Festival is the grand-daddy of pumpkin festivals. The DeKalb Corn Fest is billed as the best little corn festival in the Midwest.

The past, present and future all come together in DeKalb County. We have a rich and interesting history. Modern facilities and amenities are found throughout our communities. And the future looks bright with the construction of the NIU Convocation Center and their planned Research Park.

There is plenty to see and do in DeKalb County. Its a great place to work and live.  Browse through this site to learn more about the place we call home. Thanks for visiting.
